CHAPTER EIGHT

A Word to New Believers

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

PHILIPPIANS 1:6, NIV

Victorya Says: I have a friend, Chris, who is well known in Hollywood. Because she is a Hollywood celebrity, she found it difficult to find a quality guy interested in her instead of her TV persona. She had gone from one heartbreak to another and was getting tired of it all.

She said she had achieved everything she had ever dreamed of, yet she still wasn’t happy. How I wished she would try Jesus. But she felt Christianity was for me and not her. I talked to her about God many times, and one time I even walked her through the plan of salvation. But she just wasn’t ready. After six years, I was getting discouraged. But I kept praying.

Then after Chris went through another devastating breakup, a girlfriend invited her to a Christian concert just to get her out of the house. Chris called to let me know she was going to the concert because she knew I’d be thrilled — and I was. The news that followed was even more exciting. Afterwards, she called me to announce that at the concert she had accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. Finally! God is still in the business of answering prayer.

We’ve Only Just Begun

By the time you come to this section of the book, you may have been blessed by having your pre-Christian friend accept Jesus as his personal Savior. Congratulations to both of you! The Scriptures tell us that the angels are singing in heaven right now because of you (Luke 15:10). There is nothing more fulfilling than being part of someone’s successful journey to Christ.

Finally your friend has accepted Jesus. Now what do you do? Over the years we’ve noticed that sometimes after a Christian has led someone to the Lord, he feels that his work is done. The harvest is in! It’s time to rejoice and relax. But really, this new believer is more at a beginning than an end. Do you just turn him over to his own devices? No! He’s a tiny baby in the faith. He needs parents; he needs care; he needs instruction; he needs food.

Are you responsible for him spiritually? No. You can’t give him all that, so don’t try. Would it be appropriate to help guide him forward in his walk with God? Yes. You need to make sure he’s in a position to receive everything he needs to grow in his new faith. And the very first thing he needs is to know he is saved — once and for all.1

Don’t Leave Me!

There is a pattern that, although it does not apply universally, seems to be typical for a lot of new Christians. When a person becomes a Christian, he experiences a surge of God’s Holy Spirit in his life. He starts seeing things differently. He gets hungry for the Bible and begins to read it voraciously.
